Netbook Plasma

KDE project's Netbook Plasma has been available in Kubuntu since its early stages of development and testing. It is a plasma workspace optimized for netbook computers. These computers generally have screens smaller then 10 inches, less processing power, no CD/DVD drive and less memory & disk space than traditional laptops. Kubuntu Netbook Edition was first released with Kubuntu 9.10 and is it available today in the Kubuntu Desktop Edition.

Overview

The Netbook Plasma shell features two desktop activities, one for launching applications and one for using Plasma Widgets. There is a retracting panel at the top for the system tray. Switching applications is done with a widget in the top left corner. Other features include optimizations in the window state, maximization and resizing, of applications by integrating them with the window indicator before mentioned.

Installation errors

Needs to be verified

Many Asus users, especially eee pc series reported blank screen appearing after choosing either installation or live run. Error occurs as

can not mount /dev/loop1 on /cow

To avoid it it is advisable to choose discarded on shutdown, unless you save them elsewhwere option while creating bootable USB-drive from iso.

The Future

The future for the Netbook Plasma is expand and extend as a workspace. It still has some rought edges being ironed out and It will definitely provide with more sleekness and practical features in future releases.

How Can I Help?

We need help with testing as much different netbook hardware as people can get their hands on to know what we can support and what needs fixing. Feel free to join us on #kubuntu if you have questions.
